Homemade Chocolate Hazelnut Spread / Nutella

This one's been on my To Do List for a long long time now and I can finally cross it off!

Homemade Nutella is much much easier than you think and so very good.

Ingredients:
  • 1 cup hazelnuts
  • 2 cups chocolate
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 3 - 4 tbsp of confectioners' (icing) sugar (don't substitute with granulated sugar, doesn't work!)
  • 1 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp salt
You'll also need a jar or container for the final product.

Note: avoid the milk chocolate you find in chocolate bars, you can go with chocolate chips or chopped baking chocolate. Go with semi-sweet or dark chocolate for a richer taste.

Short Version:
1. Roast hazelnuts in oven, rub off skins once out.
2. Grind everything but chocolate in the food processor.
3. Melt chocolate, add to food processor, grind.
4. Jar and eat!

Spread your hazelnuts out on a cookie sheet and pop into a 350 F oven for about 12 minutes. Once they're out, take a cloth or use your hands to rub off the skins. The skins are actually quite dry so they won't be any good for making a nut butter.

The skins come off super easy once roasted
Transfer your naked hazelnuts to a food processor. Add in the vegetable oil, icing sugar, cocoa powder, vanilla extract, and salt. Chop them in the food processor for about 1-2 minutes until spread-like.

After 30 seconds
After a minute and a half
Melt your chocolate in the microwave in about 5 30-second bursts (as in microwave it 5 times, 30 seconds each). Mix the chocolate spread after each burst so it melts evenly.

Add in the melted chocolate to the food processor and let it grind for another 30 seconds to a minute.

That's it! Almost too easy, right? It's much less fat and full of sugar than store-bought Nutella, so it will taste slightly different. If it's more grainy than your liking, pass it through a sieve. It'll also seem more runny at first but it'll get more rigid as it cools down. Regardless, it's delicious!

Thanks for coming by and enjoyyyy!
